    Just saw an old slideshow of famly pics and a relative was on a hike in the mountains smoking a cigarette with a breathtaking view in the background. Where do you think he put that butt when he was done?

    We all know it was thrown on the ground of a national forest.

      Many, many smokers seem to think the whole world is their ashtray.  I have seen this even among people who are normally considerate and sensitive to others.  

      It is as if something in the cigarette turns off the part of their brains that think in terms of consideration and empathy.  Or just plain old concepts like "cause and effect" and "object permanence."  It seems to reduce people to the most basic forms of self-centeredness:

      No, the cigarette doesn't cease to exist once it leaves your hand.

      Yes, once it leaves your hand it is now ugly, smelly litter on my lawn (or on my porch, or on the public sidewalk ...)
