  •  IMO the problem revolves around (6+ / 0-)

    (i) the time commitment to be confident in using a gun in a non-firing range situation; and
(ii) the extreme difficulty in storing a gun in a home so that it is simultaneously safe and accessible enough to be useful in defending yourself.

Generally speaking, I don't see how anyone who has a full-time job and/or a life can spend the time needed to acquire and then maintain the relevant skills, and I really don't see how to solve the storage issue.  If I were somehow in a position where people with guns would feel the need to have one (or worse yet, use one), I would FAR prefer something like a baseball bat.

And I agree.  My skills have become rusty.

    •  I can do it, and so do many of my friends. If you (4+ / 0-)

are serious about even owning any firearm, then you have to make the time to become proficient.  There isn't any other way of being a responsible owner in my opinion.   I also would include proper safe and secure storage as well.

      •  You're absolutely right - my principal issue (1+ / 0-)

as a practical matter is that I really don't see how you store the firearm safely, while also keeping it quickly available for home-defense use.  This is particularly true IMO in households with children.

If your only interest is shooting on a range, that's a different matter - but I have never found self-defense arguments for having a firearm to be compelling for this reason.
