One of the worst things to do, I guess, in my opinion, is to look back and judge an action without also accounting for all the expediencies of the time.

For example, back then, DOMA was part of the culture war which the Republicans were successfully using (perhaps for the last time) to defeat Democrats right and left, building up wins particularly at the state level with all these stupid "get out the crazy religious voters" for Republicans.

Just like McCain et al are trying to damage the re-elected Obama with Benghazi, the Republicans furious at a Clinton victory, tried to destroy him with "teh Gay!"   First with DADT, then with DOMA.

I think it was and is a horrendous law full of injustice. But in the context of what was going on and the political realities of the time, it's a bit less awful.

If these things were easy, JFK would have had no subjects for his book, Profiles in Courage.   Very few politicians are willing to sacrifice their careers to do the right thing.  That's just a fact we have to live with.  Politicians are not so far removed from all of us.

"The law is meant to be my servant and not my master, still less my torturer and my murderer." -- James Baldwin. July 11, 1966.
