  •  And Princess Diana got to be the 80s spokesmodel (7+ / 0-)

for bulimia. And how horrible it was to be married to Charles and have the Queen as your mother-in-law. That was a woman I felt very bad for, and I think she did manage to overcome being a princess, which isn't what it is cracked up to be, particularly in modern times.

    •  Never got the Princess Di thing, sorry (9+ / 0-)

She struck me as a shallow, glitz-dazzled woman who got in way over her head way too young. Her much-vaunted "charity work" was nothing compared to what the average local socialite does. Maybe it was the worshipful hype that was the big turnoff for me and all that blah blah blah about a"fairy tale" and a "fairy tale gone bad." (The real "fairy tale" to me was Charles' undying love for Camilla, despite the years of separation and different courses their lives took.)

Anyway, I think Kate and Williams have it right: similar ages, education and experience, long acquaintance before marriage, Kate being a grown woman and not an inexperienced young girl. Hopefully, Kate will be well and they will have a healthy baby.

      •  Diana had the misfortune to be one of the last (11+ / 0-)

young women required to be "pure" enough to marry a future king.  What a load of crap for the British monarchy who boasts Henry VIII in their history.

      •  Oh, I am not enamored of Di or the whole (2+ / 0-)

nonsense "fairy tale" thing. She was way in over her head. I think she was a very fragile and insecure person who managed to overcome her own insecurities in a reasonable way despite the public eye. I think she realized she ruined her life when she married Charles.

        •  The thing is, the common people loved her. (5+ / 0-)

Millions of people around the world turned out to mourn her. Perhaps with the stress of modern life being what it is, they pass their days feeling way in over their heads too?

At any rate, there was a strong sentiment among many ordinary folk that, "A dream that turned into a nightmare? That could have happened to us. She was one of us."

She WASN'T one of me. I didn't relate to her in any way. I was frankly a little put off by the mourners wailing  about how they felt she was closer to them than their family and they felt worse than when their mother died. I think not getting her appeal was mingled with the fact that MY mother died about the same time, and I definitely did not feel worse about Princess Diana. I think the overidentification with celebrities is a problem for many people today.

            •  A bridge builder, mocked for dating an Egyptian. (0+ / 0-)

It wasn't just that Diana had used her fame and social entrée to reach out to marginalized groups.

If it had come to that, a princess marrying an Egyptian from a Muslim background — whose family, though wealthy, was looked down upon and not socially accepted — would have been just as earth-shaking in its way as the U.S. electing a black man president.

For a lot of people used to being treated as outsiders or social inferiors — people of color, people in poverty, people in developing countries — that meant something.
