  •  Looks more like (6+ / 1-)

    The diarist doesn't want Obama to appoint someone who played a role in genocide as the top American diplomat.

    I am not very well read on Rwanda, but this seems like a pretty good reason to oppose someone.

      You want to accuse Rice of genocide....and yes, you really are not well read on Rwanda...perhaps before you accept that the US ambassador to the UN played a role in genocide, you might want to read up on it a bit.

      •  I did NOT accuse Rice of genocide (9+ / 0-)

        I said she played a role in genocide.

        The diary repeats two different people who ARE well read on Rwanda, and THEY assert that Rice lobbied to not call Rwanda a genocide.  From what I understand, the Rwanda genocide went on in the face of massive indifference - indifference which Rice was lobbying for.

        I haven't seen anyone yet say this is wrong, or that's not how it went down.  The long article published in the Atlantic which I skimmed also supports this account.

        If you've got anything that says otherwise, please, say so.

        •  I think Bill Clinton would agree (6+ / 0-)

          he called the Clinton administration to the Rywanda genocide the single biggest mistake of his presidency.

          I've heard Rice characterize it similarly

          Hay hombres que luchan un dia, y son buenos Hay otros que luchan un año, y son mejores Hay quienes luchan muchos años, y son muy buenos. Pero hay los que luchan toda la vida. Esos son los imprescendibles.

            actively involved in covering it up as soon as a week ago. I have a long comment below. I don't want any one in positions of power who are covering up for killings anywhere in the world. We have had enough of that on this planet.

      Some leaders, particularly strong ones, appoint strong people who have the character, wisdom and experience and they WANT them to take strong stands and influence policy.

      Rice is a hack-- and she'll do just what she's told. If asked, she'll follow the history that the people in my article have laid out.

      Some people go to the polls, vote and then they feel they are done influencing the political system. some of us think that's just the beginning. And since Obama cited Roosevelts call for people to "make me do it," I take that seriously, In this case, I am doing all I can to get the message to Obama and the Democrats in the senate that Susan Rice is a bad idea.  The poll for the article suggests that folks here are pretty evenly split on this one.

      As I wrote, I've found that some people have been supporting Rice just because McCain and Graham are going after her. In this case, it's ironic, since, as I wrote, if she were a Republican, they'd love her.

      I am not a regular here, but I assume there are loads of liberals and progressives here-- Obama supporters, even though he is not a progressive. I also realize there are yellowdog Dems and moderates here as well.

      I don't really expect to change opinions of Obama enthusiasts. But I believe that at least half, maybe more of the people who voted for Obama considered him the lesser of two evils. Those are the people I'm trying to reach.

      Empty vessel, you're right about me, wrong about so much more. But I'm not going to engage with you.

      •  I have to admit that (6+ / 0-)

        I did not know much about Rice but assumed she was a smart woman, seemed competent, etc.

        When I heard she had millions of dollars of investments in Canadian pipeline companies, a red flag went up. The SOS is the one who will make the decision on the pipeline. Canadian companies are already building on land owned by Americans and destroying sensitive lands.

        Then I found this article

        http://blackagendareport.com/...

        I was really amazed by this. I had no idea that this had gone on. I was really disturbed by this;

        Last week, Rice blocked the UN Security Council from explicitly demanding that Rwanda immediately cease providing support to M23 rebels who vowed to march all the way to Kinshasa, the Congolese capital.
        This is not old news.

        The things going on in Africa are horrible. The US is using Rwanda and Uganda to attack Congo where there are a lot of natural resources. Recently large oil deposits were discovered  in Congo making one writer conclude that things are going to get worse.

        The problem is that American media rarely covers Africa. Most people have no idea what is going on over there. The things I have read recently about what Rice has done in Africa are very disturbing. I have changed my opinion of her and think that Obama should nominate someone without this history.

        I am surprised at the number of HR's this diary has attracted. I found your diary to be full of information and very thought provoking. I thought people here were more likely to look at information and not make knee jerk responses. I am frequently attacked in a liberal chatroom for being an Obama cheerleader. So don't assume I am some kind of Obama hater. I like Obama, I think he has done a lot of good things. There are some things I really dislike, no one is a perfect president.

        But, if Susan Rice has this history of covering up genocide in Africa, I do not think she is a good choice. I will leave you with one more quote from the article above;

        Rice is widely credited with convincing Obama to launch NATO’s bombing campaign for regime change in Libya. She parroted false media reports that Muammar Gaddafi’s troops were raping Libyan women with the aid of massive gulps of Viagra, refusing to back down even when U.S. military and intelligence officials told NBC news “there is no evidence that Libyan military forces have been given Viagra and engaging in systematic rape against women in rebel areas.”
