  •  First saw the Brubeck Quartet (5+ / 0-)

at the Black Hawk in San Francisco on New Year's Eve 1954. (It was pure luck that I didn't get carded)

I still play 'the Great Concerts: Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Carnegie Hall' album every so often. And I still have much of the vinyl.

A life well lived. RIP, Sir.

I fled Roseburg, Oregon in 1958 (where the Okies would crowd the local dance hall to get drunk to the tunes of The Maddox Brothers and Rose IIRC). Time Out was one of my first jazz album purchases.
I spent many night at the Blackhawk with the Cal Tjaders & Dave Brubecks regaining my sanity--fond memories.
PS Does anyone from SF remember Jimbo's Bop City? It didn't open until 2AM IIRC

Warren is neither a Clintonesque triangulator nor an Obamaesque conciliator. She is a throwback to a more combative progressive tradition, and her candidacy is a test of whether that approach can still appeal to voters.-J. Toobin "New Yorker"

      •  I don't remember Jimbo's. (0+ / 0-)

but I do remember Coffee Dan's, another after-hours club (with a somewhat interesting history) that still existed at least into the '50's.
