  •  You hit the nail on the head. I seriously get why (7+ / 0-)

parents these days don't let their kids run around loose like we did when I was growing up. For the reasons you point out. It's really sad though. I think kids should be outside more getting dirty, exploring, playing with nature.

It's also modern car traffic, non-stop stream of cars and trucks zooming everywhere, there's little safe spaces for kids nowadays.  When I was a kid we'd play in the streets and every now and then a car would come down the street, maybe doing 20 mph.

everyone knew was the playground.  1958.  I now walk on a treadmill because our rural roads are hazardous to foot and bike traffic.

That may be changing in some areas, but our culture made the choice for automobiles a long time ago.

My dad built us a treehouse 15 feet up with minimal safety features.  No one fell.  We played near and in the forbidden River, no one drowned.  We're a fear driven culture with a core myth that life is controllable if we foresee all possible dangers and avoid them.  It's making too many of us nuts, and fragile.

"Shit happens" needs to be recognized as the true reality.  When we moved into a new home when my kids were small I spent a week frantically trying to keep them from climbing on the deck railing.  One morning I took them out and said "If you fall it's going to hurt.  I'm making breakfast now.  Think about it".  End of frenzy.  They might have chosen the risk and the fall- I did as a child.  It taught me that falling hurts.

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.
