  •  ... does she know what potatoes grow in? (19+ / 0-)

Does she not scrub potatoes before eating them anyway?

On the subject of disconnect from food: I heard a story once from a friend, about the time she went to the food market near her college along with another friend of hers.  The two of them were taking a biology class together and were studying the structure of plants.

My friend was pointing out the parts of the broccoli, in the context of the class they were taking -- and her friend asked her to stop.  Because it made her uncomfortable to think of their food as having once been plants.  She wanted to think of broccoli as something that came from the grocery in little foam trays.

My mind: BLOWN.  I don't even know how to describe the combination of horror and bafflement and contempt and disbelief that is my reaction to this.

to not want to think of meat as coming from living animals, I can kind of understand but vegetables? She needs to come back as a plant next life, so she can get all her sustenance from the earth and sunlight.

still probably means getting nutrients from formerly living things -- just much longer dead.

And yeah.  I can likewise understand not wanting to think of meat as coming from living animals, but my personal feeling on that is that if the notion of eating animals upsets you that viscerally, either get over the upset or stop eating animals.

... that's not advice I can give about vegetables, though.
