  •  my greatest fustration about winter (3+ / 0-)

is that it is dark outside by the time we get home - or near dark - so my kids only get to play outside for a little while.

One of the best ways to get kids back to the earth is to work with your local school to build a garden that the kids get to work and plant in. It is amazing how quickly kids get excited about slow food when they helped put the plants into the earth, watched them grow and watered them and then get to eat them. i built one for my kids preschool. If their school doesn't have yard space, make and donate window boxes and volunteer to work with teachers to grow things like tomatoes, green beans, etc in the classroom. it take maybe 30 minutes of your time to build one and you can do it as a class project if the kids are older.

Better yet, do it as a class project and have the kids take home the box, grow the plants and bring back their harvest!
