  •  Gay Marriage Was Defeated by Sen Dems in 2010 (0+ / 0-)

but passed with the Repubs in charge.

I am as partisan a Dem as there Is but the 2009-10 Senate run by the Dems was an embarrassment and when they did move bills they weren't especially progressive.

They shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near running that chamber until most of them are gone (I'd exclude Liz Krueger, Dan Squadron and a few other good ones from the list).

Count the votes from 2010 by party. Better yet, count the votes prior to 2010. Oh wait, there never was one!

Ok, so I read the polls.

In 2009, the NY State Senate defeated gay marriage 38-24 with all 30 Rs and 8 Ds voting against it.

In 2011, the NY State Senate passed it 33-29 with 29 of 30  supporting it and 4 Repubs.

        Questions?

First, are you claiming that you prefer Republicans in charge of the chamber? (It seems obvious to me that you are, but I'd like to give you an opportunity to walk it back.)

Second, are you attributing the change in votes to Republicans? Have you controlled for the change in public support of marriage equality between the two votes?

Ok, so I read the polls.

I am saying I prefer the arrangement that has existed for the last 2 yrs (Dean Skelos and the IDC) to John Sampson et al who were incapable of running the chamber in 2009-10.

If the Senate Dems want to dump Sampson for someone like Liz Krueger or Dan Squadron, I'd happily change my opinion.  Frankly that would be the move that would show me they are serious abut governing and ready to be in charge.  It pains me to say this as a Dem activist but the Senate Dems are not showing they are ready to be in charge again.

I highly recommend the analysis from Andew C White below that pretty much hits what's happening on the nose.

With regards to Gay Marriage, the biggest change was Andrew Cuomo who made it a priority and used his clout to pass it.  And I say that as someone who is not a big fan of Andrew or his dad.
