  •  Santorum and Lee (R-UT) spearheaded the 'antis'? (1+ / 0-)

The WaPo notes the opposition was led by these two:

The risk of rejection grew after Santorum and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) announced that they had gathered the signatures of 36 fellow Republicans on a letter opposing the adoption of the measure during this month’s lame-duck session.
I get it that Santorum is looking to stay in the headlines in support of his 2016 run for President, and Lee is an up-and-coming Tea Partier and Club for Growth darling on track to become a Supreme Court justice.  But their lack of current political heft doesn't explain the abject fear that had to have motivated much more senior Senators' blatant and very public snub of the Republican Establishment with this vote.

Oh, hey ... maybe I just answered my own question, there: "...snub of the Republican Establishment"?

Against the backdrop of Lame Duck negotiations on The Debt, I guess the 38 are inoculating themselves against the same kind of Teahadist primary challenge that Lee mounted to take out Bob Bennett?

...yeah-h-h, I dunno if that really explains it.  There had to be more political weight behind the snub than only that...
