  •  Why is the government not developing curriculum? (0+ / 0-)

It seems to me that these organizations could easily feel a sense of Noblesse Oblige.  I suspect it comes from the Libertarian party's influence on the Republican party.

My point in bringing this up is that while the motive behind such things may be presumptive, they may not be sinister.  The Republican party seems to believe this.

The real obvious question (at least to me) is if we should live in a society where public education resources are developed and sustained principally by charitable contributions from the wealthy.  Or if we should live in a society where educational and scientific institutions develop our public school curricula.

put out an RFP (PDF) for a substantial suite of digital textbooks in English and math for pre-K through 12th grade, to be published as Open Educational Resources under Creative Commons licenses. Dr. Cable Green of Creative Commons told an education conference that I attended that every textbook publisher in the US turned them down flat, refusing to take their money unless the publishers ended up with full copyright and royalties on every copy.

But right wing organizations will put up millions to fund textbook writing in order to reap many hundreds of billions in subsidies and oligopoly profits while denying any increased share for the workers, no matter how much their productivity increases. That would be "inflation" of the worst kind.

Where are the lefty billionaires when we need them? Mark Shuttleworth is doing this in South Africa in 11 languages on top of funding Ubuntu Linux and its educational version, Edubuntu. UNDP funded a complete set of digital K-12 textbooks for Bangladesh. Forget Bill Gates. He wants Windows on every school computer.

      America—We built that!
