  •  Powerful stuff that word 'marriage'. (11+ / 0-)

Powerful stuff indeed. Dan Savage gets it exactly right about the automatic protections (and responsibilities) granted by that simple little piece of paper.

Maybe by Monday we'll back in the license issuing biz here in California!?!? Can't wait to open up the 18k membership roles...

    •  Notice the picture on the wall? (8+ / 0-)

On the King County sign you can see a picture of ML King, Jr.

In 1986, King County (the previous name) was renamed to King County (the new name).

Yes, the old name and the new name were exactly the same, but the county was previously named after William Rufus de Vane King (Pierce's VP, former ambassador to France, and a slave-holding U.S. Senator from Alabama). BTW, Pierce County (after the President) is just north of King County. WRdV King was elected VP, took the oath of office in Cuba, where he had gone for his health, then came home to Alabama and died of tuberculosis, without ever assuming the duties of Vice President. He was VP for 45 days.

In 1986, the name stayed the same, but the County Council passed a resolution that the County was now going to be named after Martin Luther King, Jr. Here's a link with more details:

King County Council names county after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on February 24, 1986.

And that's why there's a picture of MLK on the wall, watching Dan Savage getting a marriage license.

It's appropriate, I think, that his picture is there at this expansion of civil rights.

One more thing. That slave-owning VP (William Rufus de Vane King) shared a house for 15 years with James Buchanan (the bachelor president) and some believe they had a sexual relationship. Andrew Jackson called WRdV King "Miss Nancy" and "Miss Fancy." Another politician referred to the two as "Buchanan and his wife." (At least according to the Wikipedia article about King).

So there's a bit of trivia.
