The day that my beloved Canada joins the USA is the day I apply for citizenship in Norway.

the Norwegian national pension fund is paid for by taxes on petroleum companies, license fees, and the dividends of the (partly) state-owned oil company.

Norwegian citizens don't have to pay taxes to fund their retirement. The oil money covers the whole tab.

Insofar as their level of public services depends on the nationalization of oil revenue, they differ little from Venezuela.

I wonder why the powers that be haven't succeeded in privatizing the whole thing yet, in this era where oil companies are drilling in ever-tougher areas for ever-diminishing yields.

Presumably when every citizen understands that their comfortable retirement depends on the oil revenue remaining under public control, it's pretty damned hard for oil companies to pry it out of their hands.
