  •  Yeah, it does seem pointless. (0+ / 0-)

They have their talking points down pat, but it's tough to get them to engage in anything that resembles actual discussion. Every year or so I give it a try, but they mostly ignore any questions I ask.  Best to let them talk among themselves- I doubt they're winning any converts.

      •  Interesting- although I'm guessing (0+ / 0-)

you might be attracting people who were already sympathetic to your cause.  Because from what I've seen in the few RKBA diaries I've visited, anyone who is not in rather lockstep agreement with you guys is likely to be jumped on rather thoroughly and forcefully- hard to see how that would make anyone more likely to see your point of view.

Personally, I accept second amendment rights, but I won't pretend to feel anything other than kinda baffled by the fervor for gun ownership I've seen here.  And it seems that y'all cannot ever deviate from a belief that it's always and everywhere better to have a gun- no exceptions that I've ever seen you acknowledge.  (I'm gonna assume you agree that young children should not have access, but the dead kids I knew were teenagers.)
I'm not accusing anyone of bad motivations, I just honestly do not get it.  When I asked the question in another diary, someone responded with crime stats from the DOJ.  The same statistics that make me feel that violent crime is pretty rare made that person feel that s/he needed someone or something to "provide security". That's the part I don't get.

          1. No one speaks for all of RKBA, not even me. And I'm the de facto leader (and facto organizer.) We aren't all of the same mind on many issues.

          2. People who say things in our diaries that we don't agree with are going to get pushback. I don't know if I'd classify it as jumping on them. I know there are a few members who don't respond in the nicest fashion but for the most part, those responses are aimed at those we know pick a 'fight' and those who start off with the insults or penis jokes.

          3. I think having the option of a firearm for self defense is a good thing. I'd rather have the option to beat feet (if situational awareness fails)or use a knife or a firearm for self defense.

          4. I had access to firearms as a kid. It was always under adult supervision.

          5. When it comes to violent crime: it's a non-zero number when it comes to the possibility of being a victim of violent crime. Carrying a firearm doesn't really cost me anything. Why wouldn't I?

that in some situations, for some people, having the option of a gun could be a positive.  (I doubt it would work for me, since I don't think I could shoot another person).

I also believe that in other situations, a gun would be a disastrous addition to a volatile mix.  I'll try to find the comment from another diary where I talked about this, might have to post the beginning of the thread for it to make sense.

I don't worry quite so much about little kids- I just hope there is always the level of supervision you mention. The only little kid I knew who was killed by a gun was shot by his mom after his father left her and just before she killed herself.  I worry much more about teenagers, especially boys, because they're often considered "old enough" to be responsible, when in fact their brain development is years away from maturity.  And I cannot deny that going to those funerals had an impact that will probably last forever for me.

Gonna look for that comment thread...
