that in some situations, for some people, having the option of a gun could be a positive.  (I doubt it would work for me, since I don't think I could shoot another person).

I also believe that in other situations, a gun would be a disastrous addition to a volatile mix.  I'll try to find the comment from another diary where I talked about this, might have to post the beginning of the thread for it to make sense.

I don't worry quite so much about little kids- I just hope there is always the level of supervision you mention. The only little kid I knew who was killed by a gun was shot by his mom after his father left her and just before she killed herself.  I worry much more about teenagers, especially boys, because they're often considered "old enough" to be responsible, when in fact their brain development is years away from maturity.  And I cannot deny that going to those funerals had an impact that will probably last forever for me.

Gonna look for that comment thread...

I'm also for having options if situational awareness didn't help.

I'm curious as to your opinion on my number 5 above.

The cost for me would be living with the guilt and remorse if I ever shot and  killed someone.  In the situation above, the guy who tried to rape me was behaving like a drunken entitled asshole.  But he was also an 18 year old kid, with parents and sisters, one of whom was in my class.

Did I want to hurt him? Absolutely- or so I thought right up until the moment those guys started beating him up.  Am I glad he wasn't seriously hurt or god forbid, killed? Absolutely- even though I had to endure his endless, tearful, public, drunken apologies at every party for the next year.

In class, we point out that if you CAN'T shoot someone, you shouldn't be carrying a firearm. Whether that's for religious reasons, personal reasons, or whatever. Don't. Carry. One. A firearm is not a talisman that makes the bad man go away.
