    between sitting still and assaulting police officers. But pepper-spraying a cop will land you in prison.

      I don't consider self-defense to be assault, and wouldn't want to bet on my own ability to substitute fear of retribution for my own innate judgment of right and wrong.  It would be like squaring a circle - approachable with time and work, but not in a situation where instinct dominates.  There's a Frank Herbert quote that sums it up nicely:

      When a creature has developed into one thing, he will choose death rather than change into his opposite.
      Regardless, I think we can agree that the mechanisms of accountability for law enforcement officers who violate the Constitution are not nearly adequate, and that far from addressing this fact, political authorities are exacerbating it with new restrictions on the 1st Amendment.  Sooner or later there have to be real consequences for unleashing violence on people simply expressing their humanity and their rights as Americans.
