  •  i think i'd credit talk radio for this: (10+ / 0-)
In recent decades, Republicans have shown patience, dedication, and persistence, and it's won their ideas a commanding place in our national political discourse.
one of the things rush says often in variations is "let me tell you what the conventional wisdom is" or "this is what the majority thinks", and so on.

i think the new republicans are authoritarians and followers and they've been following the talk radio bandwagon as it blasts out the repetition that turns lies into 'truth' and so-called conventional wisdom. for me lies and unchallenged coordinated loud repetition comes to mind more than patience dedication and persistence.

their leaders and spokespeople have been picking from a daily smorgasbord of prechewed talking points that have a popular buzz merely because they've been pounded into the earholes of 50 mil a week by the main national and and local talkers after being written and coordinated by highly paid PR and propaganda pros sitting in think tanks. their politicians use staff that come straight out of think tanks and corporate offices to write their legislation, plan their political strategy, and tell them what to do, coordinated with their media operation.

i think their ideas got traction that last 20 years because there was no reaction to RW radio from thinking americans during that time. the Sandra Fluke reaction seems to be working and hopefully after rush is retired the monopoly can be destroyed and progressive radio will expand to make sure they can't regroup as some mutation of the former monster.

the effectiveness of their takeover, sure, but I was referring to a basic mindset: "We didn't get it this time; we'll just back up and try again." (And again and again and again, whittling away at the edges, until finally...) Us, we don't win an election, or achieve some legislative milestone, we go all to pieces. We threaten to "move to Canada." I think we're maturing past this, and learning to play for the long term. This movement against Rush Limbaugh, and these regular diaries, are a perfect example of our long-range thinking.

and neverending ignorance as main motivating factors for the new republicans. i think that's what keeps them on the same track year after year.

those motivated by greed may think long term to maximize and accumulate and can hire people who operate on a very short term strategy, like 3 month quarters,  or the fiscal year.

and the political strategists they hire can afford to be persistent because they're paid well, often as parts of well funded orgs to do what our side does in our spare time, often as individuals. and we're less organized and all over the place. we believe in democracy and the ability to elect representatives that can vote the  way we want to solve problems and change things. they get motivated by leaders selling hate and fear to  elect representatives to stop change.

'leaders' (hah!) like limbaugh and hannity are paid very well to spew the same shit year after year and may still actually believe global warming is a hoax but even if they began to doubt, would probably never admit it. IMO that is the republican kind of dedication and persistence to ideal.

i guess i just can't give them any credit at all, even if it's to liken them to a mean dog with a bone. i'll take the mean dog any day.

There will always be a crop of sick, damaged people for it to recruit by appealing to their ignorant hatred and fear.

It's a vicious cycle, because RW social policies actually go to create the pool of sick, damaged, alienated people the RW recruits from. The assault on the right to birth control and family planning services (if you weren't even wanted, that's some heavy baggage right there). The constant assault on social services and social spending. The insistence on a bloated defense sector and defense spending.

I believe it's all of apiece. Unconsciously, at least, the RW demagogues know just exactly what they're doing.
