    ...logical number sequences. The British system is/used to be, more complex. The had a number/date specified specification issued by the Air Ministry, which was replied to by various manufacturers (who had their own internatal numbering system). If a prototype aircarft was built, it initially bore the 'spec. no.' plus a maker's designation. Only after a discussion with the Ministry was the aircraft assigned a popular name.
