    ..the only sad note was when Supermarine went away from the classic elliptical wing, the 'standard fuselage shape', and undertook an enormous redesign to generate the Spiteful and the navalised Seafang. They were magnificent - and one of the few PRODUCTION Spiteful F.16 aircraft (2,420hp Griffon 101) tested at 494mph, straight and level, one of the fastest piston-engined production fighters, anywhere; but they were not really Spitfires......
