  •  So will this be the next "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"? (0+ / 0-)

Don't ask if you are a Christian (of the "right kind"); don't tell if you're a non-believer, agnostic, Buddhist, Hindu, (OMG!!) Muslim, Rastafarian, Mormon, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Catholic, Episcopalian, Unitarian, or whatever not militant enough/ not Jesus freak enough religion you belong to.

Is this what is next?  Sheesh!

    •  This is not what's next, it's long-time reality. (3+ / 0-)

30+ years of increasing tolerance of fundies. Now that the battle against sexual assault is starting to gain some traction, I hope it has coattails on which the battle against encroaching right-wing fundie-ism can ride.

It certainly hasn't been around as long as the military's persecution of gays and lesbians as chronicled in Gary Shilts' seminal 1990's book "Conduct Unbecoming".

But even if it were, religious intolerance, like the systemic persecution of gay men and lesbians in the military that was ignored for decades and then "addressed" by DADT and then repealed, can and must be deemed unacceptable within our military. If it requires an Executive Order to do this then so be it.

        •  That's the problem Glinda, When Bush JR (0+ / 0-)

was in charge, he made it worse. Sometimes the orders to be worse come directly from the top. And other times, these leaders are just too weak to stand up against the fundies and their C-Street cronies with all their various connections.

There are many dynamics to this. It's not just about powerful people at the top of a chain of command, sometimes it's like a cellular invasion, something that happens in the middle ranks that spreads from a Bible Class.

And it's not always just Christians that are naughty, though they are often the biggest offenders simply because there are more of them than any other faith group represented in the ranks.

US Army Military Academy Preparatory School, Ft. Belvior, Va., the back door into West Point for enlisted personnel without influential connections. What a party ... not. Spent a couple weeks with the Cadets, Veet-nam was over, over there so I quit and went to Italy to teach skiing while not shooting nukes at the Russkies, who were far too drunk to care. Very strange place up there on the Hudson, and what I did when there cannot be spoken. I applaud the soldier's courage in speaking out and getting out, didn't like the place much myself.

Just getting a handle on the knobs and dials.... Hey, don't touch that!
