  •  I didn't mean to imply that he lost his (0+ / 0-)

seat because of his beliefs. He was re-elected in 2010. Redistricting didn't help.

My point is, you can be almost anything, except transgendered or Atheist and get elected. The two big prejudices in the good ol' USA.

I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves. -John Wayne (-9.00,-8.86)

    •  How many Muslims elected besides Keith Ellison? (0+ / 0-)

And there was anti-Semetic talk toward one Jewish candidate in Kentucky (or nearby) as well. I didn't hear a huge objection from the locals over the attacks.  Those kind of comments would be condemned anywhere outside Teahadistan, but I suspect a candidate named Mohammed Hussein would get crap almost anywhere. It happened in NJ with a Muslim judge Christie named (and good for him for condemning that talk).

An atheist could be elected in any of the larger West Coast regions. Stark was Bay Area.  I could easily see one elected from Seattle, Portland, or Los Angeles area as well.  It would be harder on the East a coast and probably impossible elsewhere, for now.

      •  Thank you. I remember pre-2008 when (0+ / 0-)

the H part of BHO's name was an issue.

At least we elected Keith, now actual Muslims can serve. Can we get an atheist? Probably not, but at least it doesn't show in their name.
