  •  I feel for you, Melanie (4+ / 0-)

I have a teenaged niece and nephew, and twin babies to buy for.  I also like to send a little something to my cousin's school-aged boys just to honor my friendship with her.

What the hell can I get them that (1) they don't already have, (2) they might truly value for the long-term, (3) they might find useful AND enjoyable now and (4) won't contribute to the general over-acquisition of STUFF?

I can't give them my time because I live far away from all of them.  Yikes!

I don't want to be the aunt who always sends inappropriate politically-correct roll-your-eyes old-person stuff, but I just object to all this STUFF in general.  My cousin's house is small and looks borderline hoarder's already.

Adults might appreciate charity-based gifts, but kids usually don't.  What to do?  What to do?

    •  One year we decided to give a weekend (6+ / 0-)

outing to the family that lives far away. We wrote a check for about the same $ as we would have spent on individual presents, made up a "gift certificate," researched a couple of places that looked like fun for the full age-range, assured ourselves that our gift money would cover the accommodations.... and the other grandparents TOOK THEM ALL TO DISNEYWORLD for a week!!!

Campfire, Scouting, or 4-H? Are the older ones in FFA or NHS?
If so, sometimes there are items specific to those organizations that would be worthwhile gifts for the youngsters (or their adult leaders, for that matter).

For his birthday (17th) he got a one hour flying lesson. He ended up going to college to get a degree in aviation management, and is now a captain flying Herks for the Air Force.
