  •  The faux grills (16+ / 0-)

or fake divided lights, are at the top of my non-political pet peeve list.  I prefer just plain picture windows or sashes if you have to go double-glazed and can't afford the custom divided lights (they do exist, but are very expensive).  Those fake grilles are as convincing as a bald man's combover. And just as attractive. ;-)

What about laminated glass?  No airspace, but they work the same way the ones with the airspace does (some kind of plastic sandwiched in between the panes). They have the added benefit of being hard to break (stop, thief!) and being wind resistant.

I know the metal tends to mess with the insulation.  How old was that house?  In the 20s and after they had steel casements, or was it older with leaded glass?

The way to insulate those is with storm windows.

Also, in areas where it gets very hot and very cold, the ground source heat pump works well, pays itself off within 7 years. The Minnesota test house brought the heating bills down to something (I wish I could recall the exact number) within two digits. Most of my friends there have 3 digit heating bills.

    •  I settled for divided lights on my inside doors. (15+ / 0-)

This is the door into my office in my current house.

I had a similar one in my last house and because the main floor had 9-foot ceilings (and an 18 foot high open area) I added a direct set light over the door.

In that house, the builder provided the faux grills and we chose to only use them on the top of the windows. It did not look too bad but it helps to have a nice view to distract you:

Now I have spent too much time talking about windows and houses and I have to go. I could do this all day long!

      •  Those aren't bad. (10+ / 0-)

The ones inside the glass are the true offenders.

Isn't the light over the door called a transom?

My place has 8 foot ceilings, which I never noticed at first. Most places this age have 9 or 10 foot ceilings. I didn't notice because it's so open and has tons of big windows (two 9 foot wide ones like the one in the picture above and two smaller ones) and the previous owner knocked out the wall to the stairs and added a railing and a skylight. It was when I tried to put a hanging lamp over the dining table that I finally noticed how low the ceiling was. The hanging lamp increased the low ceiling effect so I switched to a more flush fixture.

        •  Yes! Transoms!! (8+ / 0-)

I couldn't remember the word and it was driving me crazy. The reason that "direct set" came to mind is because what I really wanted there was one of those windows like over the old school rooms ... ones that cranked open. But the builder had to work within his window company's catalog and the only thing he could offer was a truly hideous awning type window. So we settled for a direct set that the finish carpenter framed in.
