In addition to portraying Zimmerman as a racist via their manipulative editing, the defendants also falsely claimed, without any legitimate basis — and in spite of what the Sanford Police had concluded — that Zimmerman also stated a "racial epithet" during the call:
Sanford Police say that Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin in self-defense, a shooting without racial overtones, no hate crime. But when Zimmerman was calling the police the night Trayvon Martin was killed, he described the victim using a racial epithet.
    54. This additional declaration that Zimmerman had racist motivations was done both to damage Zimmerman's reputation by making him into a hostile villain, and to encourage an investigation and prosecution of Zimmerman and violating federal hate crimes laws, thereby giving NBC further material for sensational reporting.

    55. The transcript provided on the msnbc.com website exchanges "Sanford Police" for "Defendants," deliberately done to again mislead the readers.

    56. The federal government refused to prosecute, concluding that there was no evidence that Zimmerman had committed a hate crime.

    57. In particular, the defendants falsely claimed that Zimmerman said "f__ coons" during the February 26, 2012 call, knowing that claim would incite outrage
    throughout the Nation.

    58. The truth, as known to the defendants, was that Zimmerman said "f__ punks" and there was no evidence, or reason to believe, that Zimmerman uttered a racial epithet during the call
