    There are vast urban areas in the U.S. where convenience stores and fast food joints are the only things conveniently located.  So transportation and time enter the equation.

    I'm blessed to be a Californian, and to live like two blocks from an incredible vegetarian co-op and a weekly farmers market.  Not everyone is so fortunate.

    That's why guys like Will Allen are heroes to me.  :-)

      Do food coops typically take food stamps?

        Just spent a few minutes poking around on Google and it appears that most do, though I obviously cannot speak for every co-op everywhere.  That, and whether you still have to pay for a membership, is something that will no doubt vary in the bylaws of individual co-ops.  If you have a local one you want to shop at, I'd suggest you ask them directly and remove all doubt.  As for farmers markets, I could not even begin to guess.
