    ...in the old days of VCRs, we bought our own equipment, and it worked for us instead of for the cable or satellite company.

    But once people starting leasing equipment instead of buying it themselves, it really became pretty much inevitable that we'd get to this point.

    As a side note, there are a handful of DVRs that can still be purchased free and clear, although it's an increasingly rare product.  It's also what I'll stick with -- I've got a HD DVR connected to an antenna, and while I had to lay out some money up front, there's no monthly fees and no worries about whether that DVR is reporting my viewing information back to a server somewhere or any other "spying" issues.

        ...that this kind of equipment is becoming scarcer and scarcer, with the leased DVRs wiping pretty much everything else out of the mass market.
