    payroll taxes and there could be a couple I left out. The poor don't pay federal income tax, but they are not left untaxed.

      The amount of the net transfer can be significantly in excess of payroll and sales taxes, though you are right to highlight those.

      My main objection was that the notion that everyone should pay at least a dollar is often a right wing talking point. A lot of people aren't aware of how many people are kept from being destitute by refundable tax credits.

        it is to be poor. Living for a week on a food stamp budget, while potentially eye-opening, could just as well give a self-righteous person a feeling of superiority because they managed to survive one week. Such people would never consider how ground down they might feel if poverty were their daily, unremitting lot.
