      the ground is supposed to be completely frozen by the second week of December. we get less than 9 hours of daylight, and my garden is shaded most of the day this time of year.
      But soft soil and thaws most days have turned on the growth at what is simply the wrong time of year. This is likely happening to wild local flora, as well, with consequences for plants that use up energy now instead of in spring. They may not be able to regenerate come March.

        and also whether we get another March like last year's.  I think that a few years of that hypervariability will begin to affect ecosystem health in significant ways.
