I especially like 'ugsome' it seems to have different connotations from 'ugly' or 'loathsome'.  The best thing about English words is they come from so many sources - Old English, Norman French, Norse, Greek, Latin...we have so many groups of 'synonyms' with Latin vs Germanic roots that have slightly different 'feelings'.  It's almost impossible to translate Shakespeare into French or German where pretty much all the words are either from Latin or Germanic roots.  I think it's this flexibility (with a little help from the British Empire) that has made English such a globally dominant language.
