  •  My granddaddy was a TX sheriff (8+ / 0-)

I think he would have laughed at all this high tech. He once rode a horse for 24 hours straight, chasing down an escaped prisoner through the woods. His strength was in knowing people, building trust so people told him information, would show up at his home in the middle of the night to confess, knowing he would give them a fair shot. He wasn't saintly, but knew that human intelligence worked better than anything to solve crimes. It is hard to think of anything that would make a community fear the sheriff more than a drone flying over.

George W. Bush: the worst Republican president SO FAR.

    •  part of it is Fox News' fault, part of it (0+ / 0-)

is due to billionaires and the vast reich wing conspiracy, (I cast no aspersions on that term. Given Teabuggery and how it was formed out of bullshit, it did and does exist) and part of it is due to people being too low on the information totem pole. But the net result is that a story like this - the militarization of the sheriff's department in a sparsely populated texas county goes by without any comment at all. No complaints, no fears of illegal search and seizure, no cost benefit analysis, including analysis of our constitutional rights, and absolutely no discussion of the mere existence of these programs in the media.

I suspect that your gramps would be turning in his grave over the recent turn of events, post 9/11

Once a government takes control and adds to its powers, it rarely if ever gives it up without a fight. Look at how DARE acted in the 1980s when people tried to decriminalize pot.

What we call god is merely a living creature with superior technology & understanding. If their fragile egos demand prayer, they lose that superiority.
