imported many slaves to Surinam.  Many escaped up the rivers and formed their own communities way upstream.  Interesting history.  I was reading up on Afro-Colombians and read a bit about the Maroons and other peoples who started as escaped slave communities on the northern coast of South America.  An anthropologist named Richard Price has written a lot about the Maroons in Surinam, and truth is, it's a remarkable history.  My younger brother surprises me sometimes - he heard I was interested and immediately sent me a couple books by Richard Price.  No telling what he's reading.
