  •  Greetings, and Happy Holidays-- (5+ / 0-)

    whatever your tradition.

I had never known about this black pete character,
but this made me think about something that I haven't
thought about in years--actually decades.  This unleashed
a memory that I know is true, but I'm having a hard time
    accepting as Real.

And thinking about it is actually making me a little sick
to my stomach, and a bit verklempt.

As an immature, self-involved 14-yr-old at the time,
    I didn't question our high-school show....

The Minstrel.  With white boys in black face--I believe
they were called End Men, and they sang songs like:
    My dear ole Mammy.

They sat in chairs at the sides of the stage, viewing the
other acts until it was time for their solos.  In black face,
dressed in raggedy clothes, with fake and exaggerated
    southern black accents.

Me:  a freshman, nervous at the thought of my own song,
too stupid to even realize what was going on around me.

The next year, the Minstrel concept disappeared, and it
    became The Variety Show.

omg.  That was in 1969.  19friggin69.
Decades ago, but my face burns with shame now at this
memory.  That i didn't realize wtf was going on around me.
That i didn't stand up and say....this is so wrong.
That i actually participated in this, without a thought.
