I always had a sense that employers gradually adjusted salaries when women joined the workforce so that eventually 2 people were earning what one person used to make. It seemed that they took 2 earners per family into consideration and paid just enough to get by. At first women could be paid less (in the employers mind) because they were extra income and had a husband as the breadwinner. Then, they decided men could be paid less because they had a wife also bringing in money. It had nothing to do with the job being performed. It had to do with what is the minimum we can pay this family so perhaps they don't starve and can afford to come back to work.

    •  Yes, our tradition of "free" labor prompts a (8+ / 0-)

constant effort to achieve that "ideal."
The Congress, by rationing the currency, helps. Indeed, one might ask whether rationing currency has the same effect as rationing anything else. People start to hoard, quite irrationally.

that therein lies the power of wisdom.

How can it not be immediately recognized that in every way, in every sense, these ideas of the division of labor and capitol, this idea of being on one side or the other, this, this is the very essence of the illusion. We will demand all the money we can for what we do, and demand that we pay as little as we can for what we want.

I am reminded of the words of Alan Watts from, “The Book: on the taboo against knowing who you are”.

-“The political and personal morality of the West, especially in the United States, is – for lack of this sense, utterly schizophrenic. It is a monstrous combination of uncompromising idealism and unscrupulous gangersterism, and thus devoid of the humor and humanness which enables confessed rascals to sit down together and work out reasonable deals.”

The point I want to make is this. It is mythological. There is not a conflict between Democrats and Republicans. They are like a middle school gym class divided, on any given day, into “Shirts and Skins” for our entertainment.

The rascals DO sit together. They DO work out reasonable deals.

It is, in my opinion, just that their ideas of reasonable have only their own interest in mind. WE, are not part of the equation, until WE become the rascals.

And in almost every case, with I will grant a few notable exceptions, if given the opportunity, WE DO become the rascals.

Until WE are capable of being better people, how can expect anyone else to be different?

    •  That system was pretty tough on my mom, who (12+ / 0-)

was the breadwinner. When she complained about her salary, she was told that her better paid co-worker had a wife and family. My mom had four kids and was divorced.
