That's how a very successful Asian businesswoman described the Republican Party to me recently when we were discussing politics.  She and her husband would seem to be a perfect fit for the kind of minority voter Republicans think they can attract.  This woman and her Asian husband own their own business (a number of businesses, actually); they earn a lot of money; and they're a traditional, nuclear family with three children.  Indeed, the wife came to this country from China when she was ten years old, so she's the classic immigrant success story.  So you've got a high-income married couple with children, and both members of the couple are what Republicans would call "entrepreneurs."

Yet when these folks look at the Republican Party, they see a bunch of old, bigoted white people.  Contrary to what Murray may think, my friends are neither stupid nor deluded.  They've just looked at the GOP and come to the entirely rational conclusion that it doesn't welcome Asians.

This isn't a messaging problem.  It's a values problem.  Racism remains a core value to many Republicans.  No one should be surprised if Asian voters see that, and no one should blame them when what they see influences how they vote.
