Americans and their guns, and their tendency to try to solve all problems with force and violence.

You can see it throughout our society, in our foreign policy, our criminal justice system, our tendency to use military force. We are an authoritarian society and the ultimate authority is rule by sheer violence.

    John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Schwarzenegger.

Young kids grow up seeing movie heroes successfully using guns to fix everything.

You can see it in a recent poll in which a majority support torture.

We live by the rule of force in every aspect of society. Our obsession for law and order, for strong armed domination, is exemplified in our police use of pepper spray and violent tactics against demonstrators.

Navy Seals. Drones. Aircraft carriers. Nuclear bombs. Boys grow up thinking a man has guns, and when insurmountable problems arise, getting out the guns is the manly thing to do.

The American cultural trait of violent authoritarianism is the worst thing about this country, and this is seen in both political parties. The rank and file support (or tacit acceptance) for allowing or excusing torture, rendition, killing civilians and yes, killing children, is seen in each of the two parties.

We need only look within at ourselves to see what is wrong, to understand why alienated young men turn to power and guns when all else fails.
