    I'm not a mammalogist by any means but my impression is that there was a trend in mammalogy in years past to over split species into subspecies.  Grizzly bears and cougars had dozens of subspecies each.  I think it is now recognized that this was often over emphasizing really trivial (i.e. not biologically meaningful) differences and the trend is not toward fewer subspecies.
