  •  No real rx for PPS (8+ / 0-)

other than occupational and physical therapy to maximize the remaining muscle strength.
My husband was paralyzed from polio in one leg, abdomen and feet and has walked with a steel full leg brace since the age of 18 months. Never slowed him down. Around 50 life began to get harder, no more taking the train to work and eventually we had to move our bedroom to the first floor. In his 60's though it began to take him 20 minutes to walk the end of a moderate hall. He has always known about PPS and so has adjusted assuming that was what was going on with him. At my insistence he went to a rehab doc who suggested x-raying his hip. Since he had been supporting all his weight on one hip for over 60 years...it was gone! A replacement and some PT later has added much to our lives.
PPS is something to be aware of and accepted, but there are the normal problems of aging that occur also.
We are lucky to connected to a teaching hospital, but even then some young doctors will ask my husband if he was born in a foreign country.

    •  You're right. There isn't any rx for PPS (7+ / 0-)

The problem with PPS isn't in "use it or lose it"; but in opposite direction.  The more you uses the more you lose.  One PPS doctor described to me this way -- "think of your energy as a battery, the more you drained the battery thru usuage, the less you have left." Unlike normal people,  a large chunk of neurons in polio survivors's have died during the initial polio bout.  Because Peg didn't know about PPS during her two years quest for a diagnosis, she kept trying to carry out her normal everyday life, instead of slow down, she became wheelchair bound sooner.
