  •  No State vehicle inspection (0+ / 0-)

in MI?  PA has a fairly strong annual State inspection for your vehicle.  I guess one could always get someone to pass them when the vehicle doesn't but then they risk their State license (not sure if it is a license of certification but no matter).

No required hours of driving on the road?  IN PA we just upped that to 65 hours behind the wheel with adult driver and includes various conditions - night and poor weather.  Additional restrictions on driving under junior license on times and on numbers and types of passengers.

You get a learner's permit after passing the written test.  Then you are very restricted in when you can drive.  Then you do your 65 hours and must pass a skills test once that is completed.  Then you are on a restricted license for a period of time after that.

    •  There isn't a state vehicle inspection here. (4+ / 0-)

When I went through the drivers license process, you had two options. Learners permit, then restricted license, then regular license. OR you take a written test at 18.

That seems overly simple.  I like being in a stricter State but I wonder if anyone has done any comparative studies to see if what we do is effective.

except smog check in urban areas from 5 years to 25 years old. No inspection to put a car back on the road that hasn't been registered in years. Defective equipment just doesn't seem to be a significant cause of accidents.

It isn't much more difficult to get a CPL (concealed pistol license) in WA. We are a shall issue state. You have to go the the police station and have 2 sets of finger prints taken and pay your fee. One is sent for a federal check and the other for a state check. If you pass you get your CPL (no training required, no range qualification required, no registration of firearms.) We do not have a high murder rate amongst the 50 states.

I like being in a state that doesn't feel the need to regulate everything and probably toss on another tax for doing it.
