We have guns in our society. We are drenched with them.

We will never remove guns from our society. Ever.

Those two pieces of data will not change in the USA in any of our lifetimes.

To me, it's not about removing them anymore. That clearly will never happen (ever). It's all about workable regulations and laws.

    WORKABLE regulations and laws.

Passing laws to prohibit guns in an area is not workable. Criminals don't follow laws, only the law abiding.

I'm all for preventing people from carrying guns into crowded places like movie theaters, bars, concerts, etc. But aside from metal detectors, just asking them won't work (criminals won't listen).

    Send conservatives to for re-education.

    •  I would suggest that some pro 2nd folks wouldn't (0+ / 0-)

      pay attention, either.

    •  Well, the diary suggests testing, training. (0+ / 0-)
Shouldn't people who want to own guns at least have to prove basic proficiency and safety knowledge?
Nobody talks about removing them altogether except as a strawman.

...because you finally figured out you'll never win that round.  Now we've got to teach the Brady Bunchers they won't win on their "restrictions" either.

        •  And why would "we" have to do that? (0+ / 0-)

"We" really don't have to do any such thing at all, because training and testing makes sense.  It makes so much sense that extremists have to raise the boogeyman strawman of "taking away guns" in the first place, right?

          •  Santa Claus makes sense to a two year old. (1+ / 0-)

A two year old probably would have difficultly reading a warning label, much less a four page brochure--big print or not.

So let's agree; toddlers access to firearms and Draino should be strictly supervised.

          •  And don't get me wrong. (1+ / 0-)

I still have every reason to suspect that you--but critically, more consequential voices--spewing this line about "restrictions" still want to take away guns.  You'll just hope for a long bleeding in gun ownership like Canada's currently experiencing, hoping that it will reach a point where you can put in place a serious disarmament regime.

Well, that's why I sell guns.

            •  Well, as long as you have a GOOD REASON. (0+ / 0-)

You agree that training and testing is a good idea, except that it would cause a disarming of people too stupid or careless to pass a basic test.  And saying that a stupid, careless person can't own as many guns as he wants puts us on a slippery slope.   So you are in favor of stupid, careless people being as free as they can to own as many guns in any way they please, so that we don't end up with the horrors of Canada.  Which seems like a nice, safe place to live, relatively.

Okay, there's one vote for swirling the bowl.

I can't wait to hear your opinion on whether convicts of violent gun crimes should be allowed guns.

Well, that's why I sell guns.
Of course.  Make sure they go to stupid and careless people and we'll never have to suffer the relative safety of Canada.  Good thinking.

    •  Here's the deal. (0+ / 0-)

We'll tell you what's workable, and you deal with it.  That's it.  You can propose whatever you want, but it will be rejected out of hand until you demonstrate a modicum of familiarity with the subject beyond "waaah! I hate guns!"
