  •  I love a parade (4+ / 0-)

Which is good, because our county seat, Albany, OR, pop 50K, has the biggest vets day parade west of the Mississippi. I go to it every year. They need to change Veterans Day to sometime in the summer tho, November is cold and rainy here.
I'd go to the parade in Chicago but its a drive. Ive never been in Chicago outside the O Hare airport.

At the last vets day parade I was struck by the feeling of community. I mean they got whole elementary schools marching in this parade, every boy and girl scout troop. here in OR, there's no military bases, other than the Oregon Air Nat Guard. Yet Oregon sends its soldiers all over the world, reserves and NGs. You really feel like our soldiers are our own people  going to this parade. theyre not a big Green Machine, like they were perceived in my day: theyre people, family members.
Thats a good feeling. Thats probably why I go.

I always  get there late--I try and miss the mandatory Fat-Old-Vets-With-Beards-And-Leather-Vests-on-Harleys Roarby, I find it boring and irritating.
Back in The Day, during exlrrp's Post War Early Blue Period, I rode motorcycles and had tattoos. In those days bikers were outlaws and only badass people like Hells Angels, paratroopers and sailors had tattoos.bikers lived a hard life and it showed.
Nowadays, its bring the wife and the Grandkids on the Super bike towing the house trailer. Half the motorcyclists you meet nowadays are like accountants and real estate agents.
So they all like to dress in black leather (ooo-kinky!) and roar around saying, in effect, LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME!!!!There's also a de-rigeur body style that goes with this which is somewhat corpulent.
exlrrps preference and intention in all things is to fly below the radar so I find this irritating. I like to pretend I am normal and average primarily for camoflauge.

just another group of people I'm glad I'm not like.

      •  Is that why people wear black leather? (2+ / 0-)

So others will look at them?

I'll never forget a Swiss woman trying to convince me to buy a leather outfit, top to toe, in Buenos Aires. Leather is cheap so I could have afforded a great suit but I also didn't want all the looks that I thought would accompany it here in the states!

military base... we'd like to retire in the area and getting that last assignment to the base near where you would like to retire is such a benefit for folks. We'll just have to figure out without that benefit, I figure.
