  •  With all due respect to Sen. Harkin, (2+ / 0-)

but it's not up to the Prez not to "buckle".  It's up to him and other Dems in Congress not to buckle--to the Republicans (or the Prez is he comes up with something that doesn't jive with our Democrati values).  Constitution 101--the Prez can't sign anything not sent to his desk in this issue.  So really, he needs to direct that to his colleagues, IMHO.

    •  Harkin and Rockefeller are already doing that in (8+ / 0-)

the Senate but they also want Obama to stand his ground.  I can tell both Harkin and Rockefeller really like Obama and support him all the way but they want him to stand strong.

    •  Yes and where are Senators Franken and Klobuchar? (0+ / 0-)

      Al,

You keep asking me for money and I expect that's because you are up for reelection.  You better work on Senator Amy because I am holding the entire party responsible.   I will register my opinion on the outcome at the polls in 2014.  That's right, the outcome.  So don't think your vote is enough.  You have to work as hard getting Senator Amy to vote against these cuts as you are working on churning out your fund raising e-mails.

      •  Actually Franken & Klobuchar have been busy (4+ / 0-)

making sure the TPP doesn't ship jobs overseas.  Franken is also fighting to protect your privacy (I'll have a diary about this tonight).  He'll get behind this, so will Klobuchar.  But don't punish them if they do the right thing but some Dems don't.  I believe in rewarding politicians who do the right thing at the polls.

        •  I'll be going scorched earth (0+ / 0-)

Al better get together with Harkin and stop this train wreck because I will vote on this issue and while it was possible to hold individuals accountable I followed the course you suggest but this is the ultimate betrayal of a foundational policy and the entire party will need to pay if they do this.

If they do this, they will have disconnected the 3rd rail, more cuts will come, and Medicare and Social Security will go off the cliff in the train wreck of the New Deal.

He's not responsible for how Franken and others choose to vote in the Senate.

I, for one, am happy to donate to his campaign and appreciate his efforts.  He's one of our best Dems in the Senate.

Democratic Leaders must be very clear they stand with the working class of our country. Democrats must hold the line in demanding that deficit reduction is done fairly -- not on the backs of the elderly, the sick, children and the poor.

    •  While Obama institutionally cannot do much (0+ / 0-)

As President, he holds an incredible amount of influence. There's a reason he's working hard for the tax side of the deal, urging his supporters to call their representatives. If we could have that mobilization towards strengthening Social Security and Medicare as well, it would be great.

Republicans are far more socialist than Democrats. Just because they want to redistribute the wealth upwards does not make it any better.

get cozy over some pro-austerity supply-side nonsense?

will you support the Senate in telling Obama to take that deal and shove it?

B/c that's what it might come down to.

We can trust his judgement and expertise in know who is driving the bus for Dems on these negotiations.  He's been around quite a while.
