    In NH it used to be $15 filing fee, very easy.

    The backstory: Back in the 1980s one judge refused to allow a divorced woman to resume using her birth name -- because she'd then have a different name from her children, which the judge thought would maim them for life. The ACLU appealed for her, and the state Supreme Court said: As long as it's not for fraud, anyone can use any name they want to.

    I had clients do name changes long before gay marriage was recognized. The probate judges weren't thrilled but because of that divorced-woman case, they had to let it go through.
