  •  I wish I could recommend this repeatedly. (7+ / 0-)

My epiphany was the business approach to teaching.  My child is a student, not a customer.  He does not get to pick & choose what math skills to acquire, or whether or not to learn to read.  If I left it up to him, he'd be taking nothing but video game I, II, III to infinity!

This reductionism to a "series of economic transactions" deprives us all of our humanity.

    •  That's the nub of the argument, I agree entirely! (5+ / 0-)

being redefined as somehow less than human. That's what I find particularly offensive about the whole mindset ... and the argumentation that proceeds from it.

We are much more than what we make. We are way more than what we consume. And we are far more than what we do. Our fundamental worth and value are not rooted in such things. "If you are what you do, when you don't -- you aren't."

      Thanks, zith!

In times like these, we cannot make too much music.

don't get to choose those who they serve. They serve all students, of the appropriate age, not just those who have a greater capacity and desire to learn.

                            Just my two cents,

Torture is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who is inflicting it on whom.
