      It is about 23 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas, but there is a whole lot less of it in the atmosphere, and...this is the important part...if we stopped emitting methane today, it would all be gone from the atmosphere in about 12 years.  CO2, on the other hand, would take about 400 years or so to disappear.

      Methane is currently (an important word -- if the permafrost gives up enough gas, things could change) about 20% of all forcing, and a bit more than half of that comes from human activity.  Dropping the human component to zero, then, would reduce overall forcing by a little more than 10%.  Nice, but overwhelmed within a couple of years by CO2 growth.
