  •  Why does it have to be entitlement reform? (3+ / 0-)

Why cannot the other budget items that drive it up like Defense, Homeland Security, Foreign Aid, etc.. I cannot believe that social programs are the only budget line items that can be trimmed to reduce spending. Social programs are paid for by the taxes called Social Security and Medicare. Cut the fat out of the general budget.

    •  Foreign Aid is peanuts. (4+ / 0-)

And well spent on keeping the world a more stable place.  But defense and homeland security have a lot of built in pork.

The one thing Republicans are right in is that we do not have a 'revenue problem'.  They're wrong in saying we have a 'spending problem', though.

What we have is a 'revenue to spending ratio problem' and such an issue can (theoretically, at least) be addressed either by spending, by revenue, or by both.  They're bloviating liars when they insist the only way to address it is spending.  And they're even bigger liars when they claim that the way to 'fix' that ratio problem is to actually decrease revenues by giving even more tax cuts out.

    •  It doesn't. It's entitlement reform because (5+ / 0-)

that's what the scary huge deficit is designed to do:  provide a pretext for destroying programs Americans absolutely want preserved.
