  •  No he is not a good interviewer (1+ / 0-)

Stewart is cowed by politicians and blowhards, and seldom pushes them.  Case in point: the insufferable Alan Simpson was given free rein and extra segments to push his lies on Social Security, Medicare and the budget, and Stewart did NOTHING to challenge him.  Stewart is helpless when presented with a strong personality - he's a terrible interviewer, on the whole.

    •  OR... he doesn't disagree with Simpson (0+ / 0-)

Stewart may offer a lot of "prescient political analysis" but he may not be all that liberal himself.  He seems to be more of a good government or government for the good citizens moderate.

The journalists in traditional media (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, etc). do a far better job than he does on a consistent basis...

      said no one ever.

    •  He's not "cowed," but is able to like the person, (2+ / 0-)

even when he disagrees with the person's ideas. The ideas do not blind him to the person behind the ideas.

This quality makes him one of the few interviewers in the US who can get almost anybody he wants to appear on his show. People sense that his starting position is to look for what's good in the interviewee.

This quality also makes him a Liberal in a powerful sense--he accepts the fact that good people can and do have beliefs or come to conclusions that are the opposite of his. His big tent is much bigger than mine, and I admire him for that.

Does he blow an interview now and then? Sure. Sometimes he just doesn't know enough to lead the interview in a new direction, or to counter an argument.  Sometimes he allows himself to get sidetracked. Sometimes he goes for the joke, and derails the interview that way. Not too often.

An interesting question I hope he will answer in his memoir someday: which interviews did he personally feel were fails?
