  •  I suspect what we've got here is the (7+ / 0-)

"birds if a feather" syndrome. That is, certain populations of like-minded, self-centered, instinct-driven people are congregating in the warmer climes, while those that don't fit into the narrow-minded life style are moving away. I don't think the congregants realize they are being subsidized from the public purse. They also don't realize when they move into a gated or country club community that they are actually in a socialistic environment. They don't appreciate that about the health care industrial complex either. If they think about it at all, "socialism" means the national/federal government is telling them what to do and, if anybody is going to tell them what to do, they want it to be local officials, people who are closer at hand and easier to bribe or otherwise control. In other words, they are objecting to "nationalism," but they don't know it.
It's easy for a state like Georgia to balk at expanding their preventive health care program. Georgia has 197 counties serving about ten million people and almost every one of those counties has a functioning health department with clinics on the ground. They probably don't need more, but they sure would like more money.
On the other hand, when social services and amenities are abundant, it isn't necessary to individuals and households to be nickel and dimed to death. Public services are more efficient because they are able to take advantage of economies of scale. So, of course, if they are more efficient, they are going to cost less and individual households need less income.
Really, we ought to rename the southern tier as the Socialist States of America. If nothing else that would let them drop the hated reference to union.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
