      The fact that they are doing the job they are paid to do doesn't mean they disagree with the protesters. As long as the orders they are following are lawful and within the scope of their job duties, they have no choice but to follow them.

      It is not, for example, appropriate for a firefighter who thinks that it would be good public policy to let houses in high crime areas burn down to stand by idly while they do so. Any firefighter who would do so should be fired just as any police officer who refused to deploy to maintain the order or protect public or private property during a protest they agree with should be fired.

      Personal beliefs should not enter into how police behave.

      Now, what they do on their own time in civilian outfits is entirely up to the individual.
