These morning "human interest" shows focus on such pressing matters as Pretty Young Woman Goes Missing, Dogs Howling In Time With Christmas Carol, and Witless Hollywood Celebrity Drinking And Driving, Again.

Meanwhile, most other curmudgeons of my advanced age (59) turn to foreign news outlets like the BBC or Al Jazeera English for news of the US and the world beyond.

This trend and the concurrent rise of "reality shows" signal one thing: networks unwilling to pay news reporters, writers, editors, and others who used to create meaningful content. Now we can sit on the couch watching a coach humiliate a fat person on a treadmill, or a bunch of strangers stabbing each other in the back for a big cash prize.

Meanwhile, we're raising generations of Americans with no idea what's going on in the world, in their country, even in their home town... or where those places are located on a world map.

Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
